Films on theatre include 'the Pantomime Dame', community theatre in London, Ken Campbell, Trevor Wishart and Howard Barker. On experimental cinema - `abstract cinema', Deren, le Grice and Tait and various film / performance projects. The many dance films in the collection (produced by ACE till 2003) include productions about the Royal Ballet, Ballet Rambert, DV8,Darshan Singh Buller and Gaby Agis.
The collection also includes films that document particular Art movements that have continued to influence contemporary British art such as Surrealism, Dada, Futurism, Kinetic art, the ‘Independent Group’ and profiles of the first YBA.
Other films address race, gender and post-colonialism, among them: 'Hidden Heritage: Black American Painting', `Frantz Fanon –Black Skin, White Mask', a film about the Gujurati painter Bhupen Khakhar, the films of the Black Arts Video Project, the first all black dance company in London (1946), African, Irish, Indian and West Indian musicians in the UK, along with profiles on Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti as well as ‘Five Women Painters', focusing on Carrington, Agar, Hamnett, Knight and Nicholson.
Restored digital copies of all the films in the collection are stored at the National Film and TV Archive of the British Film Institute.
